There are two easy ways to connect:

  2. Manual Connection – On your device, turn on Wi-Fi and select “MountainFun” or “MountainFun5G.” When prompted, enter the password 39BCFun! (no spaces; B, C, and F are capitalized).

Will my cell phone work at Retro Metro Deck House?

Yes - your cell phone will work at Retro Metro Deck House. We use AT&T and have excellent reception on the mountain. T-Mobile and Verizon also list the property within their coverage areas. Please note that there is no landline in the house.

What is the WIFI speed/streaming like?

Wi-Fi & Streaming
The house is equipped with Skyrunner Internet on their highest-speed tier (SkySprinter) for fast, reliable service. Streaming in 4K works beautifully, and the router provides strong coverage throughout the house.

Internet access is delivered via a satellite dish on the lower deck. Please do not adjust it, as this may interrupt service. For any issues, please contact Greybeard Rentals directly.

What are the Internet usage rules?

By using the property’s internet service, guests agree to follow Skyrunner’s Acceptable Use Policy and network management practices. Please use the connection responsibly and avoid any activity that could disrupt or violate Skyrunner’s terms.

Anything special about using the decks?

Please don’t sit on the deck railings or throw objects from the decks. Use caution with children and pets, and never leave them unattended outdoors.

Because the property is surrounded by wildlife, including birds of prey and mountain animals, keep small pets leashed and supervised at all times for their safety.

What happens if the power goes out?

In the event of a power outage, please call the Greybeard Rentals Emergency Line for assistance. Electricity is supplied by Duke Energy (1-800-POWERON) to Retro Metro Deck House (39 Boulder Cove, Fairview, NC 28730).

Flashlights are located in the kitchen for your convenience. The home also includes a whole-house generator powered by propane which automatically activates during outages to supply power to essential systems and appliances.

Note: The generator performs a weekly automatic self-test. You may hear a loud engine sound for approximately 15 minutes; this is normal operation.

What does the security camera do?

IMG_4027.jpeg

For your safety and property protection, a single exterior security camera is installed and directed toward the driveway. The camera records motion-activated video only (no audio) and does not monitor any private or interior areas. The image below shows its field of view.

Where are the fire extinguishers? What happens if the smoke/CO detectors sound?

Fire extinguishers are located under the cooktop in the kitchen, in the hallway closet near the half bath (upper level), and in the laundry room (lower level). Each extinguisher has operating instructions printed on its label.

Smoke and carbon-monoxide (CO) detectors are installed throughout the house. If an alarm sounds, a voice alert will identify the affected area.

  • If there’s a fire: Evacuate everyone immediately and call 911.

  • If the CO alarm sounds: Move all guests to fresh air and call 911.
To silence the alarm once it’s safe, press the center button on the unit

Who can use the home gym?

The workout area is reserved for adults only. Please follow safe lifting practices and keep children and pets out of the space. The breaker box and water heater are also located here. Use caution and respect the equipment.

All exercise equipment is used at your own risk. Wipe down surfaces after use, and watch your head when entering or exiting; the ceiling is low in this area.

Children?

We love ours as much as you love yours. For safety, please do not leave children unattended inside or outside the home. The house is not childproofed, so we encourage guests to bring any safety or childproofing supplies they may need during their stay.

Is there bear or other wildlife in the area?

Yes, this is the mountains, and you may encounter wildlife! Please stay aware and remember that food and trash attract animals. Never leave food, cans, or garbage outside. Bears are especially drawn to grill areas, so secure trash and clean the grill after each use.

Birds of prey may pose a risk to small pets; never leave dogs or children unattended outdoors. Other visitors include bobcats, squirrels, chipmunks, and the occasional friendly neighborhood cat. A small family of deer often grazes along the lower property.

What do I do if there is snow or ice?

If roads are slick or icy, do not attempt to drive. Mountain residents often stay put or park at lower elevations rather than risk traveling during winter conditions.

If you become stuck or need assistance, call the Greybeard Rentals Emergency Line at 828-669-1072, ext. 203. Always check local forecasts and road conditions before traveling up or down the mountain.

What if there is a water pipe break or we see a leak?

If you notice a water leak or a broken pipe, call the Greybeard Rentals Emergency Line at 828-669-1072, ext. 203 immediately.

The main water shut-off valve is located in the crawl space, accessible through the door on the rear side of the house near the lower deck. Turn the valve handle to stop the water flow if needed.

How do I use the TVs?

Use the Samsung remote to power on the main TV. The home screen will display available apps. Select Sling TV to begin watching. (If recently used, it may open directly to Sling TV.)

  • Primary bedroom: a separate remote operates Sling TV.

  • Bonus room: use the Fire TV remote for Sling TV access.

Movie rentals are blocked on all TVs.

How do I watch streaming services on the TVs?

Apps such as Netflix, Prime Video, Hulu, and others are available on each TV. Sign in with your own credentials, and please log out before checkout.

A paid Sling TV subscription is included for live channels and DVR. Use the Retro Metro Sling account, no need to sign in with your own.

How do I watch a Blu-ray or DVD?

Located in the TV & Media Room, the Blu-ray/DVD player connects through the DVD input on the TV. For surround sound, press the power button on the sound system; the subwoofer is near the couch.

A large DVD collection (various ratings) is provided for your enjoyment. Please view at your discretion.

Anything special to know about the washer and dryer?

The washer and dryer use HE (high-efficiency) detergent or pods. If using pods, place them in the pod dispenser, not directly in the drum.

Before each load, clean the dryer lint filter for safety and faster drying. The machines are located in the Laundry Room on the lower level.

What do I do if I see bugs?

If you notice bugs inside the house, call the Greybeard Rentals Emergency Line at 828-669-1072, ext. 203. The home receives regular pest service, but occasional visitors such as mosquitoes, stink bugs, ladybugs, may still appear.

Outdoors, we practice a live-and-let-live approach; this is their mountain home too.

How do I use the hot tub?

Please review the safety rules posted on the deck before use. Detailed instructions, including how to remove the cover, adjust temperature and jets, and care tips, are available in the Hot Tub Operation section (see below for videos and manuals).

How do I work the fireplace?

Before lighting a fire, make sure the flue is open, a closed flue will fill the house with smoke. See the Fireplace Operation section for a helpful top-down fire-building video.

Use hardwood logs only; avoid pine, which creates heavy smoke and residue. Newspaper or plain brown paper make excellent kindling (avoid glossy pages).

Always ensure the fire is fully extinguished before leaving it unattended. Close the fire screen and supervise children and pets nearby.

Enjoy! The fireplace is one of the coziest parts of the Retro Metro experience!

Is there poison ivy around?

Unfortunately, yes, it’s part of mountain life. We pull, spray, and occasionally grumble at it every season, but it always returns. The best defense is knowing how to identify it.

For visuals and tips, see the NC State Extension Office publication on identifying and treating poison ivy, an excellent infographic to help you spot it before it spots you!
